Mural - two figures on a staircase

Politics, at whatever level, is certainly one of the greatest challenges we face today. Various crises such as the pandemic, wars and global warming are challenging the political system of liberal democracy. Added to this are rapid technological and social change and increasing interdependencies. That is why work in the parties is not easy. Recognition is therefore due to all those who take it seriously, who strive for the success of the country or the city before their own. Volunteers in local politics deserve special appreciation. Unfortunately, however, there are also fundamental failings on the part of the parties.

The parties must take citizens seriously
Democracy means taking citizens seriously. It does not mean talking at the mouth of the party clientele or "I paint the world as I like it". The political goals of the recent past have been very modest. Elections were to be won, and content was less important. When, in recent years, have political parties got round to holding nationwide debates that affect the fundamentals of our lives? When - before 24 February 2022 - was the issue of national defence and its serious shortcomings addressed? Which democratic party has made the problems that an increasingly diverse society can bring with it the subject of a broad public debate?
Just don't touch the difficult issues that might displease our electorate seems to be the motto of the parties.
This also applies to European issues. How about stating a few uncomfortable facts? For example, that the scope for political action by a European nation-state today is very limited. That the opportunity to help shape the future of this planet lies in European unification. And that European independence in the interests of its citizens cannot come for free. One does not shape one's destiny by chance, but through sustained endeavour with a goal in mind. It is interesting to note that it is precisely politicians who dare to speak out clearly in this regard that win public approval.

Citizens - an underestimated role in the political system
As far as citizens are concerned, they should reflect on what role they want to play in the political system. Do they see themselves primarily as consumers of politics? Then they have missed the better part. Because as an individual part of the general public, as citizens they are also the "owners" of this country. Therefore: Don't be satisfied with party events that could also be offered by the hiking club or the countrywomen's association. Do not let the parties off the hook, activate your role as a critical citizen who will not be fobbed off with election gifts at the expense of the general public. Use your adult self and demand political debates of value that help pave the way for a future worth living. And if you are a member of a political party, this applies all the more ....
